Description
An unprotected wooden stock wears hollow where it rides the edge, and once it is hollow the gauge no longer holds a line. The brass plates take that wear instead and can be drawn flat again.
The pin is tapered and set slightly proud, filed to a knife rather than a point so it severs the fibre instead of tearing it. Thumbscrew is knurled brass and locks without a tool.
Set the pin by eye against a rule, then cut a test line on an offcut before the real one. A gauge is quick to set and slow to correct, and that is the order most mistakes happen in.
