Description
Twenty-four ounces is the weight most people settle on. Lighter and you are tapping; heavier and your forearm decides when the session ends.
The head is beech, which marks before your work does and can be trued on a bench plane when the faces go out. Hickory in the handle because it bends rather than shatters, and the wedge is through-driven and visible from the top.
A mallet is a consumable in the way a hammer is not. When the faces are too dished to seat a joint squarely, take a few shavings off on a plane and carry on โ the handle will outlast several truings.
